Ray is a stone-cold playa of a cartoon cat. I work in a museum. If pushed, I would usually suggest that people like me are more knowledgeable of the thugged-out cartoon cat community than vice-versa. It’s no bad thing, it’s a question of who wears the shiniest jewelry and who has the time to spot aforementioned status symbols. So when Ray went the hell down to the museum, and even took the trouble to provide the attendant with a (seemingly sorely needed) lavatory break, it made me smile.

The Hammersmith Palais is a great venue. Wide rather than long, the view is fantastic, and the bars are plentiful even if lager that isn’t ‘Australian’ isn’t. And I finally get to go on what is supposed to be the last night ever. The first support act required me to ignore them completely for the good of my health. The volume of the second act did not give me that option. A punk band trying to be tortoise but without any sense of, well, without any tunes. I mean, I like spazz-core, but this was just shit. Half an hour of mumbled jokes and Sinead O’Conner video remix shenanigins later, I was very much in the mood for the fall. Shame, then, that the latest incarnation of the legendary group sounds like a competent, pedestrian covers band of themselves. When the keyboardist started singing we headed for the door.
